  • Floodbloxs are the green alternative to sandbags and are a proven, easy-to-use solution for properties at risk of flooding. A Floodblox is a jute bag filled with a gel formula which, when immersed in water, swells up and can be used in exactly the same way as a traditional sandbag. The advantage is that it is light to carry and easy to store until required. Floodbloxs work in salt water, and the bags, but not the content, are totally biodegradeable. After use, the contents of the Floodblox can be emptied out and used as a soil improver.

Floodblox have been tested, and purchased by numerous UK councils including Blaenau Gwent, Caerphilly, Reading, Taunton Deane and Brent who have rated Floodbloxs better than other comparative products.

  • Conservation volunteering in North and North West London is organised by Dave (dave.lawrence@dsl.pipex.com, 07957 577355 or
020 8444 6285) Dave began as a very keen volunteer with the London Intervarsity Club (http://www.londonbiorhythms.com) , and now manages 3 nature reserves in North and North West London. One, in Belsize Park, has been nominated for "Local Nature Reserve Status" and the Jenny Wood Nature Reserve, which is where most volunteers from the London Intervarsity Club (http://www.londonbiorhythms.com) now help, is an exceptional small nature reserve in a built-up, and somewhat socially deprived area of London. Please contact Dave if you want to help at any of the reserves in North London. You can assist on an occasional basis: help does not have to be a regular commitment, but you will find the experience socially and environmentally rewarding!

  • The Tower Hamlets Co-operative Development Agency (CDA) is based in East London. The staff have international experience in helping to set-up small, or medium-sized, ethical businesses, and are expert at assisting those arranging employee buy-outs, when owner-managers consider retirement. Priority is given to local borough residents, but professional help is available for all. At the Tower Hamlets Co-operative Development Agency they can recommend first stop advice on the EU and UK government grants available.

One of the flag-ship projects of the Tower Hamlets Co-operative Development Agency is the socially vital food co-operative. The 2 salaried staff are paid through a British National Lottery award: other helpers are volunteers. In Tower Hamlets, extreme wealth co-exists alongside dire poverty. In many of the poorer areas public transport is difficult, and supermarkets can be 3-4 miles away. Members of the Tower Hamlets Co-operative Development Agency Food Co-operative deliver, to the door, fresh fruit and vegetables. The turnover is currently over £5,000 a week, and rising. The mark up is minimal. If the Tower Hamlets Co-operative Development Agency Food Co-operative wasn't there, many isolated, elderly or housebound people just wouldn't have access to any fresh commodities. Small corner shops just don't have the turnover to stock perishable items. An additional benefit is that deliveries also mean "a visitor". The extended social benefits are one of the reasons that the Lottery Grant was awarded.

All English and Welsh Credit Unions are members of the Association of British Credit Unions Limited ( www.abcul.coop), and both ABCUL, and the individual credit unions themselves, are strictly regulated by the (UK) FSA (Financial Services Authority) www.fsa.gov.uk/register/home.do.
